How Long will it take me to Cruise around the world?
The answer to this question is ambiguous.
Initially, the time taken to travel around the globe used to be three years or more.
However, this has changed over time, since sailors have previously sailed in lesser days.
The first ever circumnavigation was done by people on a Spanish expedition.
They set out on 10 August 1519, using the Western route to the East Indies.
They set sail with a fleet of five ships, all led by Ferdinand Magellan, who was a Portuguese explorer. The journey began at Seville.
About 3 years later – 22, September, 1522 one of the ships from the fleet returned to Seville.
The ship has managed to sail around the world, but unfortunately, Magellan had died during the journey.
I have read so many personal experiences about people who have sailed around the globe.
Most of them seem to have taken between 3 years and 5 years.
Some people have also reported that they sailed around the world in a matter of 50 days or less.
All of these people sailed eastwards.
Currently, there are two common routes used by sailors who choose to circumnavigate the world.
Both routes always start in Europe.
Note that the water’s conditions affect the entire journey and the outcome.
The route you choose determines the distance, the current, hurricanes, the wind’s strength and other factors.
That’s why the eastward route is easier to use and the westward route is very challenging.
This is the reason for disparity in how long you will take to sail around the world.
If you are sailing in a race, or you want to try out speed, the best route to use runs South and around Antarctica, all the way back north to the original point. It’s the fastest route, but it’s not very scenic.
For a race, it’s recommended you use a multihull boat since these boats are some of the fastest.
If you love adventure like I do, the best route for you is the one running around the globe close to the equator. Although it will take you longer, you will enjoy lots of beautiful scenery as you sail.
Sailing around the globe is a trip of a lifetime and if you intend to, you should definitely start your journey. Just make sure you plan the trip well, and ensure you maintain high standards of safety.
So How Long Does It Take To Sail Around The World?
The length of time taken to sail around the world is variable and it depends on other factors.
Factors like the boat size and type, length of your stops, locations and the route used.
On average, people take 3 and half years to circumnavigate.
The speed record for cruising around the world is 45 days, 13 hours, 42 minutes and 53 seconds.
However, realistically, if you are planning to cruise around the globe you should plan for it to take at least one or two years.
